Love-a-Thon Challenge| Invitation to Tea

Loveathon 2016

When I saw this challenge on the Love-a-Thon schedule, I knew it was perfect for me! Sitting down to share a cup of coffee or tea with my friends is the best way to catch up. I wanted to modify the original challenge a bit. Instead of a singular person, I wanted to talk about the different authors I would invite to my tea party!

Tea Party

J.K. Rowling // I saw a lot of questionnaires saying they’d love to sit down with J.K. Rowling for tea (including me!). I think this shows what a huge impact she’s had on many of us and our reading styles. Harry Potter is one favorite stories and I’m falling for the her latest series with Cormoran Strike.

Sarah J. Maas // The author who has made many of us remember why we love fairy tales. Her Throne of Glass series blew me away, and I can’t WAIT for A Court of Mist and Fury!

Ernest Hemingway // The master of short, sweet and to-the-point prose that’s made a huge impact on American literature would be fascinating to sit down and talk with.

J.R.R. Tolkien // Admit it – asking Tolkien about his inspirations behind LOTR and the writing process would be amazing.

Margaret Mitchell // Gone With the Wind was a turning point for me. Getting the chance to pick Mitchell’s brain? Yes, please!

George R.R. Martin // The reigning king of fantasy always presents such a relaxed presence. It feels like he would be so approachable.

Marissa Meyer // I feel like I shouldn’t even have to explain this one… #TheLunarChronicles

What authors would you invite to the tea party?

2014 Love-A-Thon: Mini Challenge #5: Letter To Me

Dear Future Blogging Me,

Right now, I’m still learning how to be a serious blogger. Before, I was balancing work, school, and my blog. Now that I’ve graduated and have a little more time, so I want to really make some improvements.

I’ve been debating about switching over so I can use Ashley’s Book Blogger Ultimate Plug-In (it looks so amazing!) but I’m worried. I love this gorgeous design that Anna Moore made for me, and I don’t want to lose that.

I want to start putting a little more of myself into my posts and reviews. Love-A-Thon has shown me all the different styles and ways to blog, which has made me want to make The Canon a little more personable. Whatever Wednesday is my first crack at this, and I want to make more posts/features that will let me explore!

What else do I want to start doing…I want to comment more, be more active in this fabulous community! Love-A-Thon has shown me that the book blogging community is one of the most supportive, kind, intelligent communities I’ve come across in a while, and I want to be more involved!

My biggest goal is to make The Canon’s Ultimate Reading List. Haha. Even writing that strikes a little bit of fear in my heart. A sortable, searchable review list of my entire blog. Eek!

I want to remake my About Me page to reflect my personality. This is still a work-in-progress (read – I still have no idea!).

Love,

2014 Love-A-Thon: Mini Challenge #3 | Mad Libs

Welcome to Mini Challenge #3! I’m so excited about this one – I love Mad Libs! The bolded words are the blanks. Sorry for the goofiness in advance. 🙂

One day, I was surfing with Tarver. Out of the blue, a flying pig came out of nowhere! It was so shiny, aqua, and sassy. At first, we were afraid, we were petrified, but we ran, We hopped on a spaceship to make our getaway.

As we escaped, we turned up the radio because Jingle Bells came on and made me jump. Everything was extremely smooth sailing until a rhino appeared in the middle of the road. We swerved to avoid it, but while Tarver stayed on a spaceship, I got thrown onto my side in the woods.

I couldn’t get up, and felt silly as I lay there staring up at the trees. What was I going to do? I heard a bazinga among the leaves, and felt happy. Surely, this was going to be my end. As my eyes fluttered shut, the last thing I saw was a head of chartreuse hair and ivory eyes.

When I woke up again, I was on a wingback armchair. My body hurt a whole lot less, and I could sit up. There was a glass and windchimes in the room, along with a burger and a cappuccino. The door suddenly opened to reveal Levi, a concerned look on his face. I blushed and averted my eyes, but he danced and said, “Don’t be shy. It’s okay.”

He came over to sit by me, and we started talking after I told him my name. We chatted about writing, knitting, and baking and realized we had a ton in common! I thought he was squishy and couldn’t help but feel a little swoony.

Just as he reached out for my hand, the door crashed open and in came Roarke. “Don’t let him charm you away, my love!” he yelled, running at Levi. They each had a spatula in their hands and began to fight. “Stop!” I yelled, feeling so ecstatic. They didn’t listen to me. Before I could intervene, Levi fell to the floor and disappeared in a cloud of smoke.

“What was that?” I asked, staring at the empty space. Roarke dropped his weapon and came over to me. “Magic, but you are safe now, sweetheart.” He hugged me close, and I suddenly knew that this was the real deal and not just a dream.

Just as It’s Your Love by Tim McGraw started playing in my head, I woke up. I cursed my saucy luck. Why had it only been just a dream?

This gif felt appropriate. 🙂

Love-A-Thon 2014 | Interview

I’m so excited to participate in the 2014 Book Blogger Love-A-Thon! Let’s get started!

THE INTERVIEW

1. How did you come up with your blog name?

I came up with The Canon during my freshman year of college. My English professors always stressed the importance of the canon, which they loosely defined as the standard works of literature we would be studying. To me, it became the ultimate reading list, which became my inspiration for this blog.

2. What genre/subject matter do you read and review the most on your blog?

I love books of all kinds! Fiction, memoir, young adult, classic…you name it, I’ll try it! I tend to lean more towards books with romance or elements of mystery. My favorite novels combine the two!

3. Name three books you’re excited for in 2014!

1. Landline by Rainbow Rowell
2. Winter by Marissa Meyer
3. The Winner’s Curse by Marie Rutkossi

4. Where in the world are you blogging from?

California!

5. Tell us — how did you get into blogging in the first place?

I honestly stumbled into blogging. Originally, I intended to write a completely different kind of blog (something along the lines of Waiter Rant – check out his older stuff, it’s hilarious!) but after some time, I realized that might not be the best idea. I still wanted to write a blog, so my family encouraged me to write about what I loved – books. Once I did, there was no turning back. The Canon was born!

6. Apart from reading, what other hobbies/interests do you have?

I love food. I love cooking, eating out, eating in, picnics. Making dinner every night has become my therapy of sorts, and dessert is a must! I have a teeny, tiny (read – major) makeup/beauty love. I love watching the makeup/beauty gurus on YouTube. They have such amazing ideas. M & I are big movie people – his guilty pleasure is to head to the movies for the afternoon. And every morning I go for a run. Running has become my safe haven. Life gets kind of crazy and my quiet time in the morning has really become a solace for me.

7. If you were stuck on a deserted island, which books would you bring with you?

Ooh, desert island books! This question reminds me of that episode in The Office…

1. Harry Potter (the whole series!)
2. Scarlet by Marissa Meyer
3. These Broken Stars by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner
4. Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

8. If you were stuck in some dangerous situation (like a fire, a sinking ship, a warzone), which book boy or girl would you want to come save you?

TARVER!
     or Harry Potter…
          …or Eve Dallas…
Shoot. This is hard.

9. You’re attending a party with your friends. Suddenly, the DJ changes the song and it’s YOUR song – what song would that be?

I can’t help it – I love this song. It makes me feel better after a rough day at work and even when life has its ups and downs, it reminds me things will get better.

Plus, the video makes me smile.

10. What three movies would you love to have your favorite author write into books, or vice versa?

I would love for J.K. Rowling to write Downtown Abbey into a book. It isn’t really a movie, but I think her writing style would really suit that particular world! I would also love if she wrote books for Nine to Five and American Hustle

Be sure to check out the interviews & posts from everyone participating in the Love-A-Thon this year! Thanks for coming by & stay tuned: my first mini challenge will be up soon!
